Imagine Christmas

Jul 2, 2009

It was incredible to be able to see the kid’s faces.

First allow me to introduce myself. My name is Adam and I am a Summer Associate for the Americorps*VISTA program at United Way of Northern Utah.  I was given a great opportunity to work with this amazing staff to better our community. As an intern here I have received many positive experiences - one of which was working with Savage Services.

Savage Services is a company that holds their annual conference in a new city each year. Whenever they have their conference, they do a community service project. This year the conference was in Ogden and we hosted 450 volunteers!!! They were an incredible group. They got to work and finished 11 different BIG projects.

Savage Volunteers Playing in Sandbox with Children from St Annes Homeless ShelterMy favorite project was at St Anne’s Center for the homeless. St Anne’s has about 10 children living there. During the day, they would just go out into the street and throw rocks around. So for the project, we put in a play area with a sand box, a grass area, and a table with shade.

They were so full of joy. Imagine Christmas for a child that has never had any kind of present. The happiness is ingrained into my memory. Experiences such as this can never be bought, only earned and given. These children gave me a smile and it will live for forever.

As I leave you today, I thank all who have participated and given me support. United Way is a wonderful organization and I appreciate the opportunities I have received while working here. Remember to always help others, because in turn it will help you as well.
