Tocqueville Society

 

The United Way Northern Utah Tocqueville Society is an esteemed group of business and philanthropic leaders who devote time, talent, and funds to tackle our community’s most pressing challenges. Each member invests $10,000 or more annually —to unite people, ideas, and resources to advance the common good.

The Impact of $10,000

  • Provide one year of wrap-around support for families through the on-site family center at Odyssey Elementary — helping parents access resources, basic needs and connect to long-term stability.
  • Support 425 families through the Welcome Baby Program, delivering essential items like diapers, formula, and clothing—along with personalized in-home volunteer visits that strengthen early learning and parent-child connection
  • Help 239 young children and their caregivers build strong bonds through weekly Learn with Playgroup sessions—providing hands-on learning, social connection and school readiness skills for an entire year

  • Sponsor two years of growth for a local nonprofit through the Behnken Nonprofit Learning Campus—equipping organizations with expert consulting, training, and tools to better serve our community.

Who Was Alexis De Tocqueville

Alexis de Tocqueville was a French philosopher best known for his work Democracy in America, written in 1835. In his time exploring the United States and what makes it unique from other nations, he stated:

“I must say that I have seen Americans make a great deal of real sacrifices to the public welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend a faithful support to one another.”

United Way’s Tocqueville Society was named after Alexis de Tocqueville and inspired by Americans’ compassion to support their community.  Today, there are 400 of these societies across the globe and almost 25k members. Collectively they have raised over $529 million.
