When kids start school, those who aren’t ready often fall behind, making it more difficult for them to continue to learn. Students who aren’t proficient readers by third grade are three times more likely to drop out without finishing high school. Family challenges and other social factors lead many to struggle just to attend school. We work with school districts to provide in-school student advocates, one-on-one reading tutoring and other academic help, and community-wide support to help every child graduate from high school ready for college or career training.
Partnering with AmeriCorps, we bring tutoring and mentoring into schools across the state of Utah Utah. In the 2017-18 school year, 1,013 struggling readers in Northern Utah got the help they needed to read at grade level so they will be able to successfully finish school.
We have expanded our efforts in the Ogden United Promise Neighborhood, with six on-site Family and Youth Specialists at local schools. These advocates help families connect with resources they need to provide a stable, secure home for their children, and to access academic help and resources.
