Job Title: AmeriCorps Member – Learn with Playgroup
Reports to: Learn with Playgroup (LWP) Manager
Playgroup Locations: Ogden, Clearfield, Brigham City, and Logan
Summary: Learn with Playgroup (LWP) is a FREE weekly educational play experience for children ages 0-5 and their parents and/or caregivers. Our mission is to help parents support their child’s development by learning new skills and reaching key milestones. Through guided play, songs, stories, and interactive activities, children build early literacy, motor, and social-emotional skills, while parents gain confidence in their role as their child’s first teacher. We aim to create a nurturing environment where children can thrive and parents can share experiences, resources, and encouragement by fostering a community of engaged parents and caregivers. AmeriCorps LWP Members lead two playgroups each week and support the overall success of the program through 6-8 hours of service per week.
About AmeriCorps: AmeriCorps, modeled after the Peace Corps, gives people the chance to serve their community, gain valuable experience, earn a monthly living allowance, and receive an education award to help with college costs.
LWP Responsibilities (report to LWP Manager):
Manage and lead 2 LWP classes with the direction and support of the LWP Manager
Complete required LWP initial training and monthly meetings
Retain participants - Retain participants through consistent communication on GroupMe, helping families stay connected and engaged with one another
Support recruitment of new families
Provide a wholesome, organized, clean and safe environment for learning and play
Prepare and present the LWP curriculum (circle time, art, parent corner and other activities) for each Playgroup session (with the help of volunteers assigned to the class)
Direct volunteers who help conduct each session
Connect with families and follow up with those who are absent using GroupMe
Connect families with community resources
Track attendance weekly and attend one-on-one meetings to review and discuss data from assigned playgroups
AmeriCorps Requirements & Duties (report to Learn with Playgroup Program Manager):
Complete a minimum of 300 hours (approximately 6-8 hours/week)
Record service hours weekly and signing timesheets monthly with fidelity
Complete required AmeriCorps Training (initial and ongoing)
Participate in AmeriCorps National Service Days (9/11 and MLK Day)
Complete required AmeriCorps paperwork including beginning and end of year paperwork and self-evaluations twice a year
Participate in site visits with LWP Manager and Coordinator quarterly
Attend monthly team meetings and monthly individual check in.
Adhere to AmeriCorps policies and code of conduct
Benefits:
Gain Experience - Gain hands-on experience working with children and families while building strong skills in classroom management and organization.
Living Allowance - Over the course of their 12 month term of service, members receive a living allowance of $4,000 (or $333/month) for the 300 hour position
Education Award - After successful completion of the AmeriCorps requirements, members are eligible to receive an education award of $1,565.08 for the 300 hour position that can be used for tuition, fees and books at any accredited post-secondary institution or towards payment of student loans. Members over the age of 55 can transfer their education award to a child or grandchild
On-going Professional Development and Support - Members receive training, support and encouragement from our program staff and ongoing access to the nationwide AmeriCorps Alumni Network that can help them with networking and employment.
Child Participation Policy – In limited circumstances, the LWP program allows members to bring their own children to playgroup. This is governed by our Child Participation Policy and is seen as another benefit for our LWP AmeriCorps members.
Member Qualifications:
Desire to make a difference in your community
Experience working with children and/or families
Good organization skills
Punctual, reliable, and a team player
Good communication skills
Basic computer skills preferred including experience with GroupMe and Google Workspace
High school graduate
US Citizenship or lawful permanent resident
Pass an FBI background check/Sex offender check conducted prior to hire
Interest in pursuing a career in education, social work or another related field preferred but not required
Availability to lead 2 classes on weekdays (morning, afternoon, and evening classes offered) and once per month on Saturday (Ogden)
Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
