Many factors contribute to a child's struggle in school. Here at UWNU, we call it the Barrier Beast. He comes around where you might not expect it. These are just some of the forms the Barrier Beast can take:
- Trauma
- Poor eyesight
- Housing insecurity
- Family troubles
- Improper clothes/hygiene
UWNU's Community Schools initiative and Student Success program work with children one-on-one so they can get the individualized support they need to succeed in school and life. Many times, this support comes in little steps.
One student success member shared a breakthrough she had with one of her students who was really struggling to get to school on time. This student loved baseball, so the student success member made a diagram and made a deal with the student: every time the student was on time for school, they could move the player on the base. After scoring so many points, the student could earl a prize. If the student was late, he would get an out.
This personalized effort to tackle this student's struggles helped motivate them to get to class ON TIME! Every student deserves to reach their full potential, and Student Success is here to help students all over Utah to do just that.
