MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service, AmeriCorps, United Way of Northern Utah

AmeriCorps Student Success members engage in a service activity each year on MLK day. This year one of the members partnered with the Peyton Hearts Organization to spread awareness of suicide, bullying and mental health. Our member said, "It was a great eye opening experience for myself and my volunteers. It took a minute for it to get off the ground, but we did. There were a couple of folks that shared their stories of loved ones that had died by suicide, have tried, and have had thoughts of suicide. They thanked us for doing what we did." The member and her group of youth volunteers were able to pass 200 crochet hearts to the community. She said, "We did this as a symbol of hope, making them aware that they are not alone, that there is someone out there that loves them and their story doesn't have to end there. There's more to their story."

If you or someone you know has had thoughts of suicide please call 988: A suicide and crisis hotline.
