United Way of Northern Utah has been celebrating 90 Years UNITED for the last six months. While there are still many exciting things to come, we held our official birthday party on June 15 at the George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park in conjunction with STEM Action Day.
STEM Action Day provides children of all ages STEM activities to expose them to STEM related career paths.
Children who work on math skills early in life do better in school overall and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.
The Utah State Board of Education reports that only 46% of Utah students are considered proficient in math. STEM Action Day aims to give children the confidence to excel in math and science.
This year, we had an exciting array of activities within 28 booths, from an Angry Birds Catapult and Autoliv car crash simulator, to measuring lengths, balancing blocks, and creating marshmallow atoms.
In our birthday shenanigans, we handed out birthday party hats to children as they came in (some of the dinosaurs got a hat too!). We had a coloring table where children could color our birthday dinosaur and turn in their drawing for a prize.
Our birthday DJs, Andy and Ryan, encouraged the crowd to sing happy birthday and played birthday games like a dance party and stop-and-go with the children.
Thank you to the 900+ of you for joining us at United Way of Northern Utah's STEM Action Day!
We are grateful to Ogden's George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park for hosting, the amazing businesses and organizations who taught us how fun STEM can be, and to you for spending your Saturday with us.
